The Department of Library, in association with the Departments of Tamil and English, celebrated National Reading Day 2026 with a programme titled “Pages of Possibilities” at the Dharamamurthi Cunnan Auditorium.
The event commemorated P.N. Panicker, the Father of India’s
Library Movement, and highlighted the importance of reading in fostering
lifelong learning. The programme featured expert talks and student
presentations on books and reading
Dr. N. Rajendra Naidu, Director, was the resource person for
the event. The programme was coordinated by librarians Shri G. Lakshmikanth and
Dr. R. Saravana Subbu Selvan, with support from Prof. S. Ramesh and Dr. C.
Karpagavalli, Heads of the Tamil and English Departments respectively.
The highlight of the event was a live newspaper-reading
session based on The Hindu. As part of the initiative to promote reading habits
and awareness of current affairs, 1,000 copies of The Hindu newspaper were
distributed to first-year students. The session was conducted by Dr. N.
Rajendra Naidu, Director, who guided students on effective newspaper reading
techniques. He emphasized the role of newspapers in vocabulary development,
improving language skills, enhancing general knowledge, and staying informed
about current affairs, while also offering practical tips on how to read and
analyze news critically.
The event concluded with a call to nurture a strong reading
culture and promote lifelong learning among students. Students from the department
of English and Tamil presented book reviews based on their favourite books.
